Today must be my lucky day.

I thought the City was unbearable, but that place is just a mild spring day compared to here. Without a doubt, we’re in the great desert, an expanse of sand no Ice Fae has ever entered. And I get to be the one who endures it.

I need to get inside before I melt—possibly quite literally.

The others are chatting while I’m busy stripping almost naked, but even my cropped white shirt and my thinnest pants aren’t enough to cool me down. It must be almost noon, the sun is shining so high overhead.

“Maybe you are the center of the chaos,” Blade says, like he’s considering it. “But does it matter?”

Sure enough, she scoffs. “Um, yeah. I don’t want to bring death and destruction and sky wolves down on innocent bystanders’ heads.”

Through our mate bond, I can hear Anna’s conflicting thoughts—even feel her fears. She wants to do her duty, but there’s a part of her that just wants to go home.

“They may well rain down anyway, if Dion is telling the truth,” Oz says quietly. “In which case we’re the best protection Aviare has.”

“He’s right,” Phoenix agrees.

I bite my tongue and keep silent, just focusing all my effort on getting through the next few seconds of intense heat. The minutes we’ve already spent have sapped away so much of my energy that I can barely think straight, much less offer any insight.

I don’t think Anna’s wrong, though. She’s always saying that there are too many questions, and the answers never make sense.

My life has gotten much weirder since meeting Anna. Things happen all the time that shouldn’t. Just this week, I’ve been to the gods’ realm, trusted a vampire, invoked ancient protection sigils in my family’s home to kill several others, traveled to another plane of reality, and escaped sky wolves.

Dion has somehow trapped the gods or kept them busy, and escaped again, being recalled only days ago. And for that matter, I’m still not clear on what he was up to before my father stupidly decided to bind him, because the gods haven’t sent any visions for months now.

Then there’s the mate bond failing, and the fact that Anna was apparently chosen as a Guardian of Magic even though a mortal shouldn’t be one. The day her full powers awoke in the mountains—was that Dion or some other god choosing her? Then why did my father call her a Guardian before that?

Nothing adds up, and I’m hot and grumpy and too tired to think more.

When I tune back in, they’re discussing whether to port, fly, or walk to the town.

“Screw this,” I mutter, and wave impatiently in a circle.

Even fatigued as I am, I call up my magic to create a portal that opens near Iroz’s outer wall. Unfortunately, that’s the furthest point in the distance that I can see. I’d port us straight into a nice chilled wine cellar if I knew where one was yet.

“There. Let’s go,” I tell them, probably more harshly than I mean to.
